Adam Remington Sandblasted Dublin w/ Horn Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates

It’s always fascinating to find out what career an artisan had before getting into pipe making. Back in the day, you’d get a job at a pipe factory or workshop after finishing high school. These days, people simply get drawn into the craft out of an already existing fondness for it. That’s how Adam Remington, of Tucson, Arizona, got into it. Remington’s prior vocations had been molecular science and engineering, though he was also deeply interested in art. He was also deeply interested in pipes, so he took a little of each of his interests and turned it into a career as one of America’s premier artisan pipe makers. That’s how it was for about a decade, between 2009 and 2019, when Remington withdrew from the artisan scene. One shape that stands out in the decade-long portfolio of Adam Remington is the Dublin. Remington carved a variety of shapes throughout his career, but he returned several times to very distinct style of Dublin, one rendition of which can be seen here. The first thing that strikes is its length: around six and a half inches, with the pipe’s stem alone being nearly 50% of that. There is something almost princely about it, especially with the decisive cant of the bowl—which, owing to the shaping, is really more of a bend, or a lean. While it’s certainly modern in design, its slender frame, brass-stabilized horn mount, and modest, burgundy finish (though with an expert, ring grain blast) lends it a much-appreciated, old-world sensibility.
